It takes sacrifice, it takes consistency, it takes perseverance, it takes self discipline, it builds character. Fitness has instilled and cemented these traits time and time again. Unknowingly developing the skills to manage an incurable, chronic disease. Every trait, every skill, every setback and every accomplishment from fitness, has directly transferred to all other areas of my life. #FlaredupFitness
The Z Press - Here’s a long forgotten strongman movement with a ton of benefit. This is one of my favourite compound movements period. Trust me, it’s humbling and a lot harder than it looks. Keeping your core tight, back straight, and elbows in, press up while keeping your shoulders packed without flaring your elbows. Leaning forward and pushing your head “through the window” once the bar has passed your forehead. Finishing the movement with arms extended above your head maintaining a straight body position. Reverse steps above while controlling the weight on the way down. Ensure you have the shoulder mobility before trying the movement. Skip those seated presses and try out the Z Press next shoulder day! #FlaredupFitness
Health and Fitness is something I refuse to compromise on, it’s my passion. Although I have been putting my energy and focus towards my career, I take every bit of my free time to keep my mind and body healthy. Taking a holistic approach and nourishing my body more than ever before. I get excited to wake up everyday to make small incremental changes towards complete optimization of my physical and mental health. That’s the future for me. Thanks for following along on this crazy journey. #FlaredupFitness
I remember taking this photo on the left in August 2009 when my health was at it worst. - I’m not one for selfies but I looked in the mirror and I didn’t even recognize myself. I saw a defeated, discouraged and damaged human-being. My body had withered away from a muscular, lean and athletic 175 lbs down to 150 lbs. I couldn’t eat due to ulcers throughout my esophagus. I was unable to retain any nutrients while going to the bathroom 20+ times a day, internally bleeding, sleeping 12-14 hours daily and running opiates just to make it through the short time I was awake. I didn’t have the energy to leave the house unless it was for a doctors appointment or test. Shortly after this I was officially diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in 2009. - On the right, 205 lbs. Almost 10 years of battling Crohn’s. Arguably in the best physical and mental shape of my life. - For those battling IBD, there is always hope. If I can help just one person live a better life with IBD by sharing my journey, I’ve done my job. - For health, nutrition and fitness, Flaredupfitness.com and find more IBD content on the @oshihealth app! #FlaredupFitness #10yearchallenge

Beating my disease one rep at a time - There is no finish line, no end, no perfect physique. Just my ever evolving vision that I work towards with a vengance everyday. #FlaredupFitness
Getting out and enjoying other areas of fitness this holiday break. There’s a lot more to life than spending it in a gym or on a treadmill. Happy Holidays! #FlaredupFitness
There are no shortcuts to building a natural physique... - You have to put in the hard work to see the results. I’ve been consistently working out for over 10 years with no more than a few weeks off and am still making improvements. I frequently get asked why they don’t look like a bodybuilder after 3 months in the gym. I’m tired of answering the question. Consistency, determination and perseverance is the key to success. - There is no shortcut, despite what everyone tells you. There’s no secret formula, supplement, workout program or shortcut. What you put in is what you get out. Eat well, exercise consistently and prioritize sleep and see the progress over time. It takes months, years, even decades to achieve the type of results you’re looking for. Genetics certainly play a role but it’s a lot less than you might think. - This isn’t a short term goal, this is a long term investment in your body, mind and health. #FlaredupFitness

2 abdominal surgeries Countless hospitalizations Debilitating acute and chronic pain Ruptured tendons Skin conditions 3 broken bones Unexplained chronic fatigue Open sores Countless infections, colds, and flus Acne Rapid weight gain and loss Malabsorption - macro, micro nutrients and essential vitamins Severely restrictive diet Food intolerances caused by intestinal inflammation Frequent, often uncontrollable “bathroom” visits Internal bleeding Anemia . “But you don’t look sick…” . In honour of Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week and I wanted to share “a few” of my own symptoms because not all diseases are visible. I am certainly not looking for sympathy or feeling sorry for myself. My goal since starting FlaredupFitness is to raise awareness to a condition that affects 1 in every 150 Canadians and over 5 million people worldwide are suffering from. Together let’s educate and inform by raising awareness to this important cause What else am I missing? Leave a comment below ⬇️ #FlaredupFitness #CCAwarenessWeek
Inflammatory Bowel Disease is an invisible illness. It could be your coworker, acquaitance, friend or even family member that may suffer in silence keeping their condition hidden in fear of what others might think. - I’ve had so many people reach out to me saying I’m the only one they can relate to because they don’t want to tell anyone about their disease. And that makes me feel awful. Because I’ve been there. I can totally relate, I wasn’t always open about my disease. I did a very good job of hiding my condition and I refused to acknowledge my deteriorating health. - It took me years before I accepted my disease and took the terrifying step of sharing my story on my blog and across social media. - My goal with FlaredupFitness is to increase awareness by making IBD more than just a “bathroom” disease. I created a platform to inform, motivate and show what’s possible despite living with an incurable, chronic disease. FlaredupFitness.com #FlaredupFitness
Sadly, I’ve had a return of symptoms and I’ve been fighting through a flare-up the last few weeks - My latest health update for November is posted on my blog, FlaredupFitness.com (link in bio) - My greatest strength is also my biggest weakness. And my top tips for how I manage a flare-up #FlaredupFitness
My latest blog post is up on the @oshihealth app under “Real Life Success Stories”! . If you suffer from Crohn’s, surgery is an often inevitable part of the disease. My symptoms progressed and became so bad that I couldn’t function day to day. Unresponsive to a medicative approach, part of my small intestine had to come out. . Read about what lead to my surgery and how I’m doing now. Download the @oshihealth app for free on the android and Apple app stores! #OshiAdvocate #FlaredupFitness
Current physique ➡️ May, 2017 #TransformationTuesday . On the right, I’m a week out of my third show weighing in at 191 lbs. . On the left is my current physique, weighing in at 204 lbs (I’m 6’0”). As you can see not a lot of difference in shape. After consistently training for for over 10 years, I only make subtle, incremental changes and improvements. My body doesn’t fluctuate much in the off-season. . On the right, I’m mentally and physically exhausted, hormones are out of whack from dieting, beating myself up with high volume training and cardio while running on 2000-2200 calories . On the left, I’m strong, full, healthy and requiring about 3000-3300 calories/day to maintain my weight. This is where my body likes to sit, requiring minimal effort to maintain this shape and body fat. . I do love competing and working towards something but I am so much healthier when I’m just training for fun. Health and fitness is a lifestyle whether anyone’s watching or not. #FlaredupFitness
Every scar tells a story. A story of hardship, pain, sacrifice, suffering and growth. It’s what made me who I am today and it’s what will make me who I am tomorrow. Living with an incurable, chronic disease has set me back countless times but has also allowed me to push beyond what I thought I was capable of. My condition has allowed me to grow and not take things like my health for granted. It has allowed me to appreciate everyday I do feel good and has motivated me to pick myself up on the days I don’t. It feels like I’ve lived a lifetime in just 9 short years of living with IBD. It’s forced me to address my health, nutrition and lifestyle that I may not have addressed otherwise. It has formidably changed me. I cant even imagine the person I would be if I hadn’t of suffered through countless setbacks to where I’m currently at. I have so much more to learn, to grow, to find the answers I’ve always been searching for. Until then, I will keep working like I’m possessed and growing myself as an individual inside and out. #FlaredupFitness
How you do one thing, is how you do everything. Forcing myself out of my comfort zone is where I grow. Taking the work ethic, consistency and determination I’ve learned through fitness to move forward in my career. #FlaredupFitness

Had a stressful few weeks but haven’t skipped a beat. Health and fitness is a lifestyle that I refuse to compromise on #FlaredupFitness
No one grows from a place of complacency. Growth occurs outside the confines of your comfort zone. It’s the unpredictability and uncomfort that I constantly find myself seeking to continue progressing. This is what keeps me up at night and wakes me up in the morning driven to push beyond what I thought I was previously capable of. #FlaredupFitness
